4 Steps To Quitting Smoking

You will find many benefits when you stop smoking. Not only will your health improve, some improvements in the first 24 hours, but of course you will also save a lot of money. You will have a better sense of general well-being, your skin tone will improve, and your hair and clothes won't smell like the bottom of a garbage can anymore.

And the longer you stay off of smoking cigarettes, your long term health outlook gets better and better. You will lower your chances of heart disease, and various cancers more and more. See below for a good overview in preparing to stop smoking.

Stop Smoking

First off, I would like to congratulate you. Since you are reading this you have taken your first vital step in quitting smoking. And taking that decision is very important and took a lot of courage. But wanting to stop the habit is just the start. There are really only four steps you will need to take to kick the habit each with sub-steps of their own. Only 4 steps you may say, that sounds easy. Well it isn't but with some hard work and dedication you will be successful.

So what are these steps? Well you have to decide to quit. Deciding isn't the same as wanting, and trust me; this is the most important point in the whole project. Next you have to get yourself ready to kick the tobacco. After that comes the actual process of quitting. Lastly are the things you will need to do once you have quit.

So how do you make the decision? First thing you should do is sit down and think of think of the reasons you want to quit smoking and write them down. Then read them aloud to yourself a few times. And be sure to keep this list so you can refer to it later. This will help you visualize your goal. Tell your family, friends, and co-workers about your decision. Having their support will be a great help, plus will it will re-enforce your decision.

Next you need to get yourself prepared to quit. Put the list of the reasons you want to quit someplace where you will see it all the time, like the refrigerator door. You could also take a copy of it to work with you. Take up a hobby, this will be a great way to take your mind off the weed when you actually quit. And be sure you instil in your own mind that this is going to be a tough task that needs to be taken seriously. And now that you have taken the decision and are ready don't procrastinate. Start quitting NOW.

Now for the actual quitting process. The hardest part is actually the simplest, just STOP SMOKING. That's right quit right now. Don't try and cut down, or switch to low tar and nicotine smokes, it does not work period. Now I know how that sounds and you are correct, it isn't that simple, but it really is. The actual action of quitting is not hard it is the anxiety and withdrawal symptoms which are difficult. But there are ways to alleviate these. Eat healthy snack foods such as raw vegetables or fruit when you feel the urge to smoke. Or take a walk, or listen to some music. Reading also another great way to take your mind off the craving. Also re-read the list you wrote during the decision stage.

If you feel you need help there are medical aids such as the patch as well as hypnotism, plus some excellent books you can read to give you more ammunition against the smoking habit. Don't feel bad if you need help, everybody needs help sometimes.

Now that you have quit you will need to keep it up. Cigarettes are a strong habit and you will need to keep that habit at bay. I mentioned taking up a hobby in the decision phase. That will really help you keep off of the weed. Take up exercising. I find that first thing in the morning is the perfect time for a quick work-out. I always really wanted that first smoke in the morning and doing a bit of exercise instead put the smokes right out of my mind. And realize how much better you feel now, how much better food tastes, how wonderful all the scents you couldn’t smell before are.

In closing I would like to congratulate you on wanting to quit smoking and wish you the best of health and happiness.

Qutting Smoking - Ways to Stop

There are many different stop smoking aides which people use when they try to kick the habit. Many of these replace the nicotine delivered by the smokes, in an ever decreasing dosage, until you are totally weaned off of nicotine.

Others, such as hypnosis, work to try and lower your anxiety and nervousness caused by your nicotine withdrawls to facilitate your quest. please be aware that there are no magic bullets, you must totally commited to quitting cigarettes.

Stop Smoking Aides

There are numerous ways that people use to stop smoking. People do actually succeed in stopping smoking but the same method of stopping does not work for everyone and sometimes the same method may finally work only after a second or third attempt at it is tried.

The most popular methods used to quit smoking and not in any particular order are: -

1) Will power
2) Cutting down
3) Hypnosis
4) Patches, Gum, Lozenges
5) False Cigarette
6) Zyban
7) Acupuncture
8) Shock event

There is no doubt that each of these methods has been successful in helping someone to stop smoking. The work in slightly different ways to each other and I will attempt to describe each method and in my opinion the pros and cons of each

1) Will power
This is probably the most used method for stopping smoking and one that does work. Actually a certain amount of will power will be required no matter what method of quitting smoking you use. Unfortunately will power can of suggests a fight and suggests that if you are strong minded you will succeed and that if you fail you are weak minded. The description will power is not helpful as far as stopping smoking is concerned because of the perceived battle that the word suggests. A better word would be 'decision'. Just make your decision and then that can be that. But make it a final decision and not some halfhearted attempt and then you can quit successfully.

2) Cutting down
This involves will power with the idea of feedback that you are succeeding plus knowing that you are gradually weaning yourself off any perceived chemical dependency of cigarettes. In theory it sounds great because if each day you smoke one less cigarette you know you are getting closer to stopping. Unfortunately in order to know how many cigarettes you are smoking you have to count them and then know at any particular moment of the day how many you have had and how many more you can have. This method means that you have to think about smoking much more than if you were smoking freely. If something is on your mind more often, it then make it harder to stop it. If you really want to succeed with using the cutting down method, don't get into counting each cigarette.

A better tactic is to decide to leave out certain cigarettes such as the one at 10:30 or the one after lunch. This way you don't have to count how many you are smoking and yet you know you are cutting down.

3) Hypnosis
This method still requires the 'will power' or even better the 'decision' from the smoker that they want to stop. Hypnosis does not take away the choice of the person to smoke rather it supports the decision to stop. It is like getting some extra help to support your decision to stop. Importantly it uses suggestions that are aimed at the stronger part of the mind, the subconscious mind, to let get of this old outdate and no longer useful response to life.

4) Patches, Gum and Lozenges
These methods still give you nicotine. The idea is that it helps with any withdrawal symptoms you may put down to stopping smoking. It is an odd sort of logic in that patches, gum and lozenges still give you nicotine as a way of helping stop taking nicotine via cigarettes. Also as long as you chew gum, suck lozenges or have to wear a patch it constantly reminds you of smoking. A constant reminder is not a useful method to use to help stop doing something.

5) False Cigarette
This is a substitute for the action and behaviour of smoking but without the intake of all the chemicals involved. It helps those who would ordinarily miss not doing something with the hands or those who would feel less confident with having nothing in their hands. The down side is that although you are no longer inhaling all those poisons you are still keeping the habit and behaviour of smoking going.

6) Zyban
A prescribed drug that was found to help smokers with any perceived chemical withdrawal symptoms. The idea is that if the physical side of smoking is being aided by zyban than all you have to do is to deal with the action or routine of smoking. As soon as you have stopped the routine and discovered you are okay and life can carry on then you can under your doctor's direction come off zyban. Once again a method that may work for some but there may be side effects of using zyban which need consideration before using this method.

7) Acupuncture
This is the ancient Chinese treatment that inserts needles in certain acupuncture points on the body. The acupuncture points are not random but are definite and accurate places on the body. The idea with acupuncture is to enable the free flow of energy known as chi (pronounced 'chee') to flow along the meridian lines in the body. Blocks in the energy flow can cause or relate to issues whether physical, mental or emotional. For some acupuncture treatment has succeeded in helping them to stop smoking.

8) Shock event
For many people a shock of some sort will cause them to finally quit smoking. The shock may be the discovery of some smoking related illness such as cancer or it may be the loss of a friend or relative. Either way it brings home to the smoker their own mortality and what part they play in staying well and healthy. No one really chooses to be unhealthy. The shock event can work for many people and help them to stop smoking. Where the shock event fails is when over time, old fears feel more distant and the ex-smoker once again feels comfortable with smoking.

The overriding asset and best resource in using any of the above methods is the decision to stop smoking. So just make your decision to stop smoking and then stick to it.

Now you can consider various ways of quitting smoking such as acupuncture, smoking hypnosis and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Though, a combination of medical as well as professional help is the most effective means of smoking cessation. Many GPs recommend NRT to the people willing to leave smoking. This is for the sole reason that the NRT reduces withdrawal symptoms in the patient.
How NRT works? Smoking is a direct result of nicotine addiction. And when a smoker decides to lead a smoke free life and cease cigarettes, various nicotine withdrawal symptoms sets in them. Thus, during NRT various substitutes of cigarette in the form of nicotine gums and patches are provided to the smoker. They are available in the registered Nicorette Gum and Nicoderm Patches forms. They indeed contain the safer levels of nicotine and are provided daily to the person willing to stop smoking. These doses are reduced over the time which gradually results in complete lack of interest for nicotine.
You can also obtain free nicotine patches from various anti-smoking societies and help centers.
Now to know why you should adopt the NRT soon, you must take a quick peek into the dangers of cigarette smoking.
About 4,30,000 people succumb to death due to cigarette smoking every year. By indulging continuously in smoking, a person reduces his life expectancy by 15-25 years and runs fast towards the death. A smoker doubles his chances of dying with a heart attack and welcomes lung cancer and voice box cancer every time he rolls the fag circles in the air. Cigarette smoking in women can be even more dangerous as the nicotine reaches their breasts and can cause further problems. The largest economy in the world the US of A spends an enormous amount of 130 billion dollars each year to fight this menace. Would you like to be part of this mass suicide? Certainly not!
Now, do you still need to know the benefits of smoking cessation? To lead a better life, smoking cessation is a must, is all I can say you in the end.
The strongest nation (both militarily and economy-wise) in the world, the united states of America need aids! Yes, the America need stop smoking aids! And you the citizen can provide that much needed aid to your nation.
Consider these statistics.
–Every year at least half a million lives succumb to persistent smoking in the US.
–According to the official stats an estimated 25.2 percent of American men (26.3 million) and 20.7 percent of women (21.2 million) are smokers.
–Even a single pack of cigarette consumed by a person everyday doubles the chances of obtaining heart attack and lessens their life.
–In fact smoking, drastically trims downs the levels of oxygen in the heart.
–Most of the smokers live, eat, drink, sleep and for that matter are sustaining for the packs of cigarettes only!
The results are really perilous. The smokers ought to reduce their lifespan by 50 per cent due to the ill-effects of nicotine fumes to their body. So it is a must that every American helps the nation by providing the much sought help to quit smoking to the smokers around them.
In fact if you are also a smoker, you must quit cigarette smoking as that is the only good you can do to you and your nation. There is no such best way to quit smoking. So, you should adopt the best-suitable smoking cessation technique according to your condition after meeting your GP only.
Yes your GP is the right person to guide you on your quit smoking regime. Due to common nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as head ache, nausea, irritability, sleeping and eating disorders and indigestion, quitting smoking is not as easy as it may sound. The perfect way to fight the peril of cigarettes is to make a mix and match of effective stop smoking ways. Combining apt NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) is indeed the most effective, easy as well as recommended means to stop smoking.

Ways to Stop Smoking

There are very many tools, products, therapies, and ways to stop smoking cigarettes in fact the list is almost inexhaustible. And many people will find that some of these various methods may work for them, while others will not. In the article below the author goes over a few tips and tricks and ways to stop smoking.

You Can Stop Smoking

The facts are clear. There is nothing worse you could do to adversely affect your health. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. Women are three times more likely to develop lung cancer then men. Cancer has now replaced heart disease as the number one killer of Americans aged 85 and younger. 1/3 of all cancer deaths are related to smoking.

Although there has been a huge decrease in the number of smokers between 1965 and 2000, 22% of American adults still continue to smoke. The good news is that surveys have shown that 70% of active smokers want to quit.

When you quit smoking the benefits are immediate. Blood cells that transport carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke begin to transport healthy oxygen. Even though quitting doesn't completely eliminate the risk of developing lung cancer, the risk of lung cancer starts to decline. One year after quitting smoking your chances of having a heart attack drops by half. The risk of lung cancer continues to decline and drop dramatically five to ten years after quitting. So we know that quitting is essential to enjoying a long and healthy life. The question is how do you pick the right way to stop smoking for you?

The first thing you need to know is that most smokers quit unsuccessfully several times before they quit for good. You will most likely not be successful your first time around - but you must still try! Each time you attempt to quit you come closer to finally quitting for good.

There are many organizations available to help you take control of your health and quit smoking. Most smokers find a greater success rate in groups. Organizations such as SmokEnders have community based seminars and will come to the workplace to counsel smokers. SmokEnders is a gradual stop smoking program that says it's success is based on treating the physical and the psychological aspects of smoking. They offer unlimited toll-free phone counselling.

Some people prefer to try to stop cold turkey. They stop smoking completely with little or no reduction in the number of cigarettes they smoke beforehand. As with any smoker who quits, those who quit cold turkey will experience the withdrawal symptoms of irritability, increased appetite and restlessness. For someone trying to stop smoking cold turkey help can be obtained using medications such as Zyban which lessens withdrawal symptoms. Zyban can only be obtained with a prescription.

Some smokers obtain relief from smoking withdrawal with a nicotine replacement commonly known as a nicotine patch. Patches are used for up to eight weeks. Nicotine patches are available over the counter. It is suggested that you talk to your doctor before trying any over the counter nicotine replacement therapy.

The American Cancer Society and American Lung Association have free information available. The federal government also has free information for smokers available at http://www.smokefree.gov.

What Happens When You Stop Smoking

You may wonder whats going to happen when you quit tobacco. Kicking the cigarette smoking habit can cause some withdrawl symtoms, and maybe some cravings. But be sure to remind yourself that these feelings and discomfort are just temporary, and that in the end you are going to feel so much better and you will be a proud ex smoker.

The author of the piece below gives some solid advice on what happens when you stop smoking.

What Happens When You Quit Smoking?

As part of a well planned and executed quit attempt, preparation is key and knowing what happens when you quit smoking is a useful part of that plan. In this article I will explain the two main sides of what happens when you finally turn your back on those evil cancer sticks.
There are health changes from quitting smoking and there are withdrawal effects from quitting smoking too. The withdrawal effects can be bad, but they can be very mild too and are a small price to pay for the long term benefit of quitting.
Over the first week, what happens when you quit smoking is that you will find that you suffer a number of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. These may include headaches, nausea, constipation, gas, sore throat, chesty cough, tingling fingers, cold symptoms and of course the dreaded cravings. You may also suffer from sleeplessness, anxiety and be irritable so make sure those around you know what you are going through and what to expect.
All of these withdrawal effects are perfectly normal but it would be unusual to suffer them all. At most, you should only experience a few of them but even these few side effects may seem like an excuse to start smoking again!
Whilst going through withdrawal, it is not uncommon for you to think that you would be better off smoking because then you wouldn't have to suffer from the side effect. Don't be fooled! If you think like that, you are merely putting off the short-term discomfort in favour of the long-term risk of smoking.
Remember to keep your resolve and don't give up. Remind yourself that half of all smokers die an early death precisely because they smoke and the other half suffers ill health because they smoke too.
If you are feeling down as a result of quitting you may well seek 'permission' to smoke from loved ones. This is another trick to allow you to smoke and abandon your quit attempt. Before you quit, make sure your loved ones know you might try to 'trick' them into permitting you to smoke so they know how to deal with it.
Of the many seemingly negative things that happen to you when you quit smoking, there are many positive things to keep in the front of your mind.
During the first week, when your withdrawal symptoms may be at their worst, your blood's carbon monoxide levels will fall rapidly along with your body's nicotine levels. You circulation and sense of smell will improve immediately as will the reduction in your risk of a heart attack.
In the first month, what happens when you quit smoking is remarkable with your lung function improving, blood circulation improving more, coughing less and your complexion improving noticeably. These are all very positive.
Within the first year of quitting, your breathlessness will have subsided, you will have more energy and your risk of heart disease will have halved compared to a smoker already!
After five years, most cancer risks are halved, after ten years, lung cancer risk is halved and after fifteen years, heart attack and stroke risks are down to the same levels as a lifelong non-smoker.
What happens to you when you quit smoking might seem negative at the time, but in the long run, it is all positive and once achieved, quitting becomes an incredibly proud-felt achievement.

Tom Dainty
If you are tired of trying to quit smoking using patches, pills and potions AND getting nowhere, maybe you need to try Tom Dainty's Quit Smoking Bible

So you can see, what happens when you stop smoking may be a little short term pain. But when you have kissed tobacco smoking goodbye forever you will be far far ahead in the end.
